Richard "Dick" Thomas Arensmeyer

January 12, 1937 - May 9, 2025

Choteau lost a familiar smile and a beloved storyteller when Richard "Dick" Thomas Arensmeyer passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on January 12, 1937, in Great Falls, Montana, to Adolph Gustav and Mae Elizabeth (Anderson) Arensmeyer, Dick spent his entire life rooted in the land and community of Choteau-a place he cherished and helped shape across generations.

A graduate of Choteau High School in 1955, Dick proudly served in the Montana Army National Guard from 1954 to 1962. In all things, he led with quiet dedication-whether in service, on the land, or in the community he loved.

In 1967, he married Kay Strauser, and with her came a ready-made family whom he embraced as his own. Dick adopted Rodney, Keith, and Kathy, and together they later welcomed daughters Carla in 1969 and Keri in 1979. His love for his family was steady and deep, revealed in countless ordinary moments that now shine in memory.

A man of many trades and unshakable work ethic, Dick farmed dryland wheat and irrigated barley, raised livestock including milk cows, pigs, and sheep, and lent his skills as a mechanic for Ekregen's John Deere Implement. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Teton County Road Department and later as a belly dump truck driver for United Materials.

But there was more to Dick than just his work. He held a private pilot's license and found joy and fulfillment in restoring old airplanes-marveling at their construction and bringing them back to life with patience and care. His love of flight mirrored his approach to life: practical, adventurous, and quietly determined.

Civic-minded and generous with his time, Dick served as president and secretary of the Eureka Ditch Board, volunteered with Teton County EMS as an ambulance driver in retirement, and was a devoted member of St. Joseph's Parish, where he also served on the finance council. His Catholic faith grounded his days and gave shape to his service and sense of responsibility.

Known for his infectious laughter and rich trove of stories-often about his youthful escapades and local history-Dick brought people together with humor, humility, and warmth. He lived close to the land, close to his faith, and close to the hearts of many.

Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kay Arensmeyer; his children Keith (Kay Lawhon) Arensmeyer of Great Falls, Kathy Umpleby of Choteau, Carla (Tommy) Palacio of Stockett, and Keri (Kirk) Yoder of East Helena; his grandchildren Ryan Meek, Nathan Williams, Joe Arensmeyer, Samantha Arensmeyer, Morgan LaPointe, Kyler Lawhon, Kellan Lawhon, and Kristopher Yoder; and his great-grandchildren Tyson Rae, Matthew Anding, Kinley Ably, Rory Ably, and Carson LaPointe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant brother George, and his son Rodney.

A Funeral Mass will be held on May 31st at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Choteau. Graveside service with military honors will follow at the Choteau Cemetery. A reception hosted by the family will take place in the North Fork Room at the Stage Stop Inn following the graveside service. All who knew Dick are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.
