Raymond F. Carlson (Ray) 88, also lovingly known as Dad, Poppa, Popeye, Mr. C. former Fairfield resident, active community member and businessman passed away Saturday November 30 at the Teton Nursing Home in Choteau.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Memories will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 2:00 P.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Choteau.
Ray was born at "Doc. Bateman's Old Choteau Hospital on Main Street" Dec.28, 1924 to Carl F. and Ella (Eidem) Carlson while the family resided at Bole, MT. He was educated in Choteau and because of childhood rheumatic fever did not graduate until 1944 from Teton County High School in Choteau. Ray attended The Los Angeles Art Institute and has been a life-long accomplished cartoonist and artist. He returned to Montana and attended Montana State College in Bozeman where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Ray married his high school sweetheart Marge Reiquam in 1948 and they moved to Fairfield. Ray worked as a painter until he and his brother Bob purchased Carlson's Foods from their father Carl. Ray and Bob continued in the grocery business until 1974. While in this business there was never a time, to their knowledge, that anyone in the area ever went hungry. Their generosity and community mindedness, instilled by their dad, carried through to when the business was sold and they continued together in The Carlson Boys Specialty Advertising Company.
Ray had been active in the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Algeria Shrine, Lions Club, Grace Lutheran Church of Fairfield, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Carlson's Foods Bowling Team, and contributing his artistic talents whenever needed in the community. Ray loved his family and spending time with them at the family cabin in Sun River Canyon where working on the grounds was like a vacation for him.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife Marge of 62 years, parents, brother Don; sisters Margaret (Peggy) Carlson Julius, and Jan Carlson.
He is survived by his brother Bob Carlson of Fairfield; son Sam Carlson of Fairfield; daughter Debbie Carlson Saylor and husband Pat Saylor of Choteau; the light of his life and soul mate, granddaughter Devann Saylor of Choteau; special family friend Connie Shoquist of Los Angeles; sister-in-law Ruth Reiquam of Choteau; brother-in-law Bob Dellwo of Choteau; nephew Jim Carlson of Seattle; niece Candy (Julius) Trenoweth of Carson City, NV; and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
