Jacob J. Wurtz
August 11, 1940 -September 29, 2026
We announce with great sadness the passing of Jacob J. Wurtz. He will be sorely missed by his wife, family and friends.
Jacob was born on August 11, 1940, in Raymond, Alberta, to Joseph and Elizabeth Wurtz. In 1948, he moved with his family to the Miller Colony near Choteau, Montana, where he would reside for the rest of his life.
On June 11, 1964, Jacob married the love of his life, Anna D. Hofer. Together they raised five children - three sons and two daughters - and built a life devoted to family, faith, and hard work.
Those who met him loved him, and he always had a smile for everyone. He was soft-spoken and always had a kind word for everyone. His slogan was "let's do everything within our ability for our Lord and community."
Early in life, Jacob managed the sheep division for the Miller Colony. He did this for 4 years. Jacob was next tasked with teaching the colony's German school, a role he held with great dedication for the next 23 years. As German teacher, he also led Sunday school, faithfully instructing the children in the Christian faith throughout their early and adolescent years. During those same years, he cultivated the colony's vegetable garden, a labor he loved - both for growing for the colony's needs and for the joy of marketing the produce, especially in Choteau, MT, and meeting new people along the way.
Jacob was a tireless worker throughout his life. He worked on colony construction crews, always making sure things were done right and kept in order. In his later years, he turned his hand to the shop, fabricating metal products. Jacob never truly retired from work - only his health, in the end, slowed him down.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, and his five children: Joseph (Tabitha) Wurtz, Choteau David (Sarah) Wurtz, Conrad, Matilda (Peter) Hofer, Assiniboia, Sask., Helen (Ronald) Hofer, Rudyard, and Matthew (Lydia) Wurtz, Conrad; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings John & Margaret Wurtz of Chester, Elizabeth & Isaac Waldner of Dupuyer, and Mary Wipf of Choteau, Montana, and also by his beloved Sister-in-Law Susie & Ben Wipf, who lovingly help care for him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Wurtz, 2 great-grandchildren, and his siblings Anna Wurtz, Joseph Wurtz, and Andrew Wurtz.
We would also like to send a special thank you to the Doctors and medical staff at Benefis Teton Medical Center, for the amazing care they provided during his hospital stay.
The funeral will be at Miller Colony on October 02, at 12:00, followed by interment at the Miller
Colony Cemetery.
