Gene Christensen, 50, owner of Old West Lumber in Choteau, MT, died peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 11, 2025. Gene was born on January 24, 1975, in Sidney, MT, to Fredrick and Sheila (Andersen) Christensen. Gene attended elementary school in Sidney until third grade, when his parents and family moved to Choteau, MT. Gene graduated from Choteau High School in 1994. Gene worked for the family construction company until 2004, when Old West Lumber opened. He first managed the business for his parents, then purchased the business from his dad in 2015. Gene found his true calling in retail as the proud owner and operator of Old West Lumber, where he served his community for many years. Known for his hard work, friendly smile, and willingness to help anyone in need, Gene built Old West Lumber into more than just a business. His dedication to honest service and his deep knowledge of tools, building supplies, and customer care earned him the respect and loyalty of countless customers and friends. A passionate supporter of the arts and community, Gene was a generous donor to many local fundraisers and causes. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing the Elmer Shock Memorial Student Art Show in memory of his friend and accomplished artist. Gene had a quick wit and a hilarious sense of humor that often kept his family and friends in stitches. He especially enjoyed traveling with his sister Dora.
Gene is survived by his siblings, Arthur (Shonie) Christensen, Dora (Ron Schmierer) Christensen, Fredrick, Jr. (Rachel) Christensen, nieces Leigh (Brad) Greyn, Trisha Christensen, Addison Christensen, great-nieces Kylee and Grace Greyn, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Sheila.
