A.J. Ward

August 30, 1940 — May 1, 2022

A.J. "Penny" Ward, 81 of Fairfield, passed away May 1, 2022 at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls, after a brief battle with illness.

Cremation had taken place under the direction of Gorder-Jensen Funeral Home and per Penny's wishes no services will be held.

Penny was born August 30, 1940 in Choteau, Montana to Howard and Maude Delle (Anderson) Cunningham. She was raised in the Fairfield area and Graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1958. Following high school she attended cosmetology school where she received her cosmetology license and got a job working at a salon in Fairfield.

Penny met her best friend and the love of her life Robert Ward in Fairfield when he came into the salon she was working at. The couple was married July 3, 1962 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. Bob and Penny would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Soon after their wedding the couple welcomed their two daughters, Roberta and Stacy. In 1968 the family moved to Chicago where they lived until 1994 when they returned to Fairfield and purchased their forever home just south of Fairfield. Penny got a job working at Fairfield Schools in the kitchen where she worked until her retirement.

Penny had the gift of gab, which made it easy for her to make friends. She enjoyed attending all of the kids sporting events with her husband and spending time with her family and her dog, Risky.

Penny is survived by her daughter Roberta Ward of Fairfield, her grandchildren Brian, Vince, Kelli and Cody; her great-grandchildren Brian Jr., Sean, Bella, Gabriel and Isis, as well as numerous extended family members on the Ward side.

Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Ward; her daughter Stacey Ward; her parents Howard and Maude Delle Cunningham and her brother Howard "Hoddy" Cunningham.

In lieu of flowers memorials in Penny's name are suggested to Fairfield High School Sports. They can be made in person or by mail to Fairfield High School; PO Box 399 Fairfield, MT 59436.
